Universities with Astronomy
The Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Institute for Astronomy are excited to partner on two undergraduate majors for students.
Hawai‘i has long been a center for the study of astronomy. Across the state, hundreds of scientists and technicians are actively pursuing astronomical research, and students from universities all over the world come to UH Mānoa to earn a PhD at the Institute for Astronomy. Astronomy is a key research mission for the UH Mānoa.
The BS and BA degree programs draw on extraordinary resources unique to Hawai‘i. No other astronomy program has access to such a variety of telescopes and instruments. Both programs build on a solid grounding in physics and other sciences through courses offered by the College of Natural Sciences. The combined degree programs include introductory, intermediate, and advanced astronomy courses and research opportunities with leading scientists at the Institute for Astronomy.
Learn from nearly 50 astronomy faculty specializing in diverse fields ranging from astrobiology, planetary sciences, and solar physics, to galactic astronomy and star formation, and continuing to extragalactic astronomy and cosmology. The work of the high-energy physics faculty complements the astronomy and astrophysics programs. Study the universe from our nearest neighbors to its farthest reaches!
